They look human. They knock politely. They ask to come in. And if you let them—or if you're caught outside after dark—they tear you apart with terrifying efficiency.
The monsters of FROM (also called the creatures, the night things, or simply "them") are the show's most terrifying mystery. After three seasons, we still don't know exactly what they are—but we've learned a lot about how they operate.
The Rules of the Monsters
They Can't Enter Without Permission Like vampires of folklore, the creatures cannot enter a dwelling unless invited. They knock, call out, sometimes pretend to be injured or friendly. But the door must be opened by someone inside.
Talismans Protect Buildings The protective symbols found throughout Fromville keep the monsters at bay when properly placed. Without a talisman, even locked doors won't help.
They Only Come Out at Night During daylight, the creatures disappear. No one knows where they go. They seem to simply cease to exist until darkness falls again.
Leading Theories on Their Origin
Fae Folk Theory Many fans believe the creatures are faeries or fae from Celtic mythology—creatures who look almost human but operate by strict, seemingly arbitrary rules.
Tulpa/Manifestation Theory Perhaps the creatures are manifestations of collective fear, given form by the trapped residents' terror.
Alien/Dimensional Beings The creatures might be entities from another dimension, with Fromville as an overlap point between realities.
Punishment Theory Some believe Fromville is a kind of hell or purgatory, with the creatures as eternal tormentors for the damned.
