Eleven opened the first gate to the Upside Down, but she didn't create the dimension itself. In 1979, when Eleven banished Henry Creel/One through a psychic gate, she tore a hole between dimensions. The Upside Down existed before this—but possibly as a formless void that Vecna then shaped.
The distinction matters: Eleven isn't responsible for the Upside Down's existence, only for connecting it to our world.
What Happened in 1979
The Lab Massacre: After Henry/One killed everyone at Hawkins Lab, young Eleven was the only survivor. In their psychic confrontation, Eleven unleashed power she didn't know she had.
The Gate Opens: Eleven's attack didn't just defeat Henry—it tore a hole in reality. Henry was pulled through into another dimension.
The First Connection: This was the first stable gate between our world and the Upside Down. Before this, the dimensions were completely separate.
The Aftermath: Dr. Brenner found Eleven alone, the lab destroyed, and a gate sealed by the dimensional barrier. He began trying to recreate what happened.
Where Did the Upside Down Come From?
Theory 1: Pre-existing Void The Upside Down may have always existed as an empty dimension—a dark mirror of our reality waiting to be filled. Vecna then shaped it using his memories.
Theory 2: Created by the Gate Some fans believe Eleven's gate literally created the Upside Down—that her power birthed a new dimension that Vecna then colonized.
Theory 3: Ancient Dimension The Mind Flayer may have existed for eons, and the Upside Down is its home. Vecna simply discovered and conquered what was already there.
The Show's Answer: Season 4 suggests the first theory is correct. The Upside Down existed but was shapeless until Vecna made it mirror Hawkins. But mysteries remain.
Why the Upside Down Is Frozen in 1983
The Will Connection: The Upside Down's version of Hawkins is frozen on November 6, 1983—the day Will Byers was taken there.
Creating a Copy: When the Demogorgon took Will through a gate, the Upside Down "copied" our world at that exact moment. This is why Castle Byers exists in the Upside Down, even though Will built it earlier.
Why Not 1979?: The 1979 gate was different—a psychic tunnel, not a dimensional merge. The 1983 gate was the first that allowed the Upside Down to fully synchronize with our reality.
What This Means: Anything that existed in Hawkins before November 6, 1983 exists in the Upside Down. Anything after doesn't—unless it's brought through.
