A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms opens with a funeral. Ser Arlan of Pennytree, a hedge knight of no particular fame, dies on the road. His squire—a giant young man named Dunk—buries him and claims his armor, his horse, and his identity as a knight.
It's a quieter opening than we're used to from this world. No dragons. No White Walkers. Just a young man trying to find his place in a realm that has no place for him.
Meeting Egg
The premiere's best scenes involve Dunk's acquisition of a squire he didn't want. Egg is small, bald, and entirely too clever. He claims to be a servant's son. He lies constantly. And something about him doesn't quite add up.
Their dynamic is instant chemistry. Dunk is earnest to a fault; Egg is a schemer with a conscience. Together, they're exactly what Westeros needs—and exactly what Westeros will try to destroy.
The Tournament at Ashford
The episode builds toward the tournament at Ashford Meadow—a gathering of knights from across the realm. For Dunk, it's a chance to prove himself. For Egg, it's something more dangerous.
The premiere ends with Dunk signing up for the lists. He has no money, no sponsor, and no real training. But he has his knight's word.
In Westeros, that's usually not enough. Maybe this time it will be.
