Spoilers for Ted Lasso Season 4 through episode 4. Episode 5 lands Wednesday, September 2.
I was sceptical. Season 3 ended in a place that felt genuinely finished - Ted back in Kansas City with his son, Richmond in good hands, the arc closed. Bringing him back risked undoing the one thing this show had that most comedies don't: an ending it had earned.
Four episodes in, I think the return justifies itself, and the reason is that Season 4 isn't a victory lap. It's an argument. Ted comes back to coach AFC Richmond's newly formed women's team, and the season is fundamentally about who gets taken seriously and who has to prove it twice.

Episode 1: "Home"
Several years have passed. Ted is in Kansas City working as an assistant manager at a grocery store - a detail the show delivers without a wink, and one that lands harder than any joke in the episode.
Then Rebecca, Keeley and Higgins turn up with a proposal: come back to Richmond and manage the club's new women's team.
Ted doesn't answer. He spends the episode showing his friends around Kansas City instead - barbecue, souvenirs, the tour - while quietly turning it over.
The premiere's key scene isn't a pitch or a punchline. It's Higgins visiting the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, which is where the season states its actual thesis: there isn't a world of difference between how Black baseball players were historically treated and how female footballers are treated right now. That's the argument the whole season is built on, planted in episode one and never announced again.
Episodes 2 and 3: Building a Squad From Nothing
*Curiouser and Curiouser!* takes its title from the show's most quoted line of philosophy, and the women's players get their proper introduction.
*Richmond's Got Talent* runs the open trials and the team's first friendly, against Hayes & Yeading United FC. Two new players come out of it:
- Lizzie, a single mother, who slots in at centre back.
- Shannon, promoted from a minor recurring role in earlier seasons - a payoff for anyone who remembers the girl playing football in the street.
Keeley spends the episode in a scramble to get the kits ready in time, which sounds like filler and isn't: the running gag is that nobody in the organisation had actually planned for this team to exist. That's the joke *and* the point.
Episode 4: "Greyhounds' Day Off"
The squad has formed cliques, which is the most realistic thing this show has ever done with a locker room.
Ted, being Ted, engineers a bonding exercise. It gets away from him. The AFC Richmond women's team ends up in trouble with the law and, memorably, in jail.
Also in play: Rebecca does not trust Zelda Southport, a thread the episode deliberately leaves hanging. Rebecca's instincts about people have been one of the show's most reliable engines since Season 1 - when she distrusts someone early, the show has historically agreed with her by the finale.
Four episodes in, that's the season's live wire.
What's Actually Working
Three things, in order of how much they surprised me:
The premise has teeth. A men's-team victory lap would have been unbearable. Making Ted the coach of a team the club created almost carelessly - underfunded, unplanned, not taken seriously - restores the underdog dynamic that Season 1 had and Season 3 had spent.
Ted is not the fixer this time. In earlier seasons Ted's optimism was the solution. Here it repeatedly isn't enough, because the obstacles are structural rather than emotional. You can't warmth your way past an institution that didn't budget for you.
The ensemble expanded instead of rotating. Rebecca, Keeley, Roy and Higgins are all back, but the new players aren't replacements - they're a second generation. The show found a way to grow rather than reset.
Six episodes remain, running Wednesdays through the October 7 finale. If the Zelda Southport thread and the museum parallel converge the way the premiere implies they will, this is going to be the season that justifies its own existence.
