Maximus is a squire in the Brotherhood of Steel who becomes one of the Fallout series' three main protagonists. An orphan who joined the Brotherhood seeking purpose and power, he ends up impersonating a knight, falling for a Vault dweller, and questioning everything his faction stands for.
His journey from zealot to conflicted hero drives much of Season 1's emotional weight.
Maximus's Origin
Orphan of the Wasteland: Maximus grew up in the ruins of Shady Sands after its destruction. He witnessed firsthand what the wasteland does to people without power.
- Structure and purpose
- Power (literally—Power Armor)
- A cause to believe in
- Escape from powerlessness
As a Squire: Squires serve knights, doing grunt work while aspiring to earn their own armor. Maximus dreamed of becoming a knight—of finally having power.
The Knight's Armor
- Took the Power Armor
- Assumed the knight's identity
- Continued the mission himself
- Desperation for power and respect
- Opportunity too tempting to pass
- Fear of remaining a squire forever
The Consequences: Maximus was now a fraud—an imposter in sacred armor. His entire storyline becomes about whether he can live up to the role he stole.
Maximus and Lucy
The Unlikely Connection: A Vault dweller and a Brotherhood soldier shouldn't work together. Yet Maximus and Lucy develop a genuine relationship:
- Both are idealistic in different ways
- Both are discovering the wasteland's truths
- Both feel like imposters in their own lives
The Romance: Their connection grows from necessity to genuine affection. Lucy sees past the armor to the person underneath.
The Conflict: His Brotherhood mission and his feelings for Lucy eventually collide. He chooses Lucy—but at what cost?
Faith and Doubt
- Technology must be controlled
- The wasteland is chaos to be ordered
- The Brotherhood's way is righteous
- The Brotherhood has its own corruptions
- Power doesn't equal righteousness
- The wasteland has good people too
His Choice: By Season 1's end, Maximus returns to the Brotherhood with partial success, but his loyalties are fractured. He's seen too much to be a true believer.
What's Next: Maximus is caught between duty and conscience. Season 2 will test whether he can reconcile his Brotherhood identity with who he's becoming.
