The Hunting Wives looked like any other wealthy suburban friend group. That was the point.
I went into The Hunting Wives expecting Gone Girl meets Desperate Housewives. What I got was sharper, darker, and more disturbing than either.
Sophie is the new arrival—recently relocated to a Texas suburb that runs on money, secrets, and the unspoken agreement to never look too closely at anyone else's life. The Hunting Wives seem like a dream: successful women who bond over shooting sports, support each other through crises, and accept Sophie into their inner circle.
But the Hunting Wives have a hierarchy. They have rules. And they have secrets that would destroy them all if exposed.
When a teenage girl turns up dead—a girl connected to the Hunting Wives' activities—Sophie realizes she's not in a friend group. She's in a cult of silence.
The show does something clever with perspective. We see these women through Sophie's eyes, initially charmed by their confidence and glamour. Then we start noticing what Sophie notices: the way conversations stop when she approaches, the meaningful looks exchanged, the questions that are met with practiced deflection.
By the time the killer is revealed, the show has made clear that they aren't really the problem. The problem is a community where wealth means immunity, where "protecting our own" means destroying anyone who threatens the status quo, where murder is just the extreme end of a spectrum of violence these women commit against anyone not in their tribe.
The Hunting Wives hunt. It's just that their prey isn't always deer.
