About The Testaments

The Testaments is Hulu's long-awaited continuation of The Handmaid's Tale, adapted from Margaret Atwood's 2019 Booker Prize-winning sequel and developed by original showrunner Bruce Miller. The series picks up roughly fifteen years after June Osborne's story, shifting the lens away from the Handmaids and toward the first generation of girls who were raised entirely inside Gilead. The series braids together three perspectives. Ann Dowd returns as Aunt Lydia, now the headmistress of an elite academy for Commanders' daughters and the unseen author of a secret testament that quietly documents the regime's crimes. Chase Infiniti plays Agnes, the dutiful adopted daughter of Commander MacKenzie, whose life of pearl-trimmed privilege starts to unravel as she pieces together the truth about her own origins. Lucy Halliday plays Daisy, a teenager smuggled in from Canada via the Pearl Girls program and dropped into a school full of girls she has been raised to fear. Season 1's ten episodes built methodically toward the May 2026 finale, "Secateurs," which delivered a cascade of revelations: Becka's act of violence against Dr. Grove, Agnes's discovery of her real identity, and a teaser of Elisabeth Moss returning as June. Hulu renewed the series for a second season ahead of the finale.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to watch The Handmaid's Tale before The Testaments?

You don't strictly need to--the pilot is structured so newcomers can follow along--but you'll get far more out of Aunt Lydia's arc, the Mayday references, and the season-finale return of Elisabeth Moss's June Osborne if you've seen the parent series, especially seasons one and six.

Is The Testaments based on Margaret Atwood's book?

Yes. The series adapts Atwood's 2019 sequel novel of the same name, which won the Booker Prize. Showrunner Bruce Miller has said the show will diverge from the book's structure in places, and the finale already moves past where the novel ends.

Has The Testaments been renewed for season 2?

Yes. Hulu renewed The Testaments for a second season in May 2026, ahead of the season one finale. Bruce Miller has confirmed that season two will deliver the long-promised June and Hannah reunion.

When did The Testaments premiere?

The Testaments premiered on Hulu on April 8, 2026, dropping its first three episodes simultaneously before shifting to a weekly release. The ten-episode first season concluded with 'Secateurs' on May 27, 2026.
