SPOILERS for Stranger Things Season 5, Volumes 1 and 2. This article discusses Steve's fate through Episode 7. If you're not caught up, come back later.
Does Steve Die? The Short Answer
No—Steve Harrington is alive through the end of Volume 2.
Despite years of fan anxiety, trailer misdirection, and countless death fake-outs, Steve survives Episodes 1-7 of Season 5. He enters the finale very much alive.
But that doesn't mean he's safe. The finale drops December 31st, and the Duffer Brothers have promised consequences. Keep reading for the full breakdown.
Volume 1: The Scares
Steve's death has been a fan fear since Season 1, when he was originally written to die. The Duffers kept him alive because audiences loved him—and have been teasing his death ever since.
- Steve leads a dangerous mission into the Upside Down
- Multiple Demogorgon encounters
- A tense sequence where he's separated from the group
Each moment felt like it could be "the one." None of them were.
Volume 2: What Actually Happens
In Volume 2, Steve's biggest moments are emotional rather than life-threatening:
The Fight with Dustin (Episode 5): Steve and Dustin physically fight—punching each other—as the stress of everything boils over. Dustin's grief about Eddie explodes, and he blames Steve for not being there to save him. It's ugly, raw, and necessary.
The Reconciliation: By the end of the episode, they've made up. Their big brother/little brother dynamic is restored, stronger than ever. It's one of the most cathartic moments in the season.
The Rescue Mission (Episode 6): Steve and Dustin race to save Nancy and Jonathan from the melting room. Steve is brave, competent, and very much alive afterward.
Entering the Finale: As of Episode 7, Steve is part of Team Upside Down—preparing to enter the bridge for the final mission to destroy the exotic matter and stop Vecna.
The Finale: Is Steve Safe?
Here's the honest answer: We don't know yet.
- "Not a Red Wedding situation" (won't kill 8+ characters)
- "Deaths serve the story"
- "Some characters won't make it"
- He's a fan favorite—maximum emotional impact
- His arc is "complete" (from bully to beloved protector)
- He has no clear post-series story (unlike others with defined futures)
- Killing him would be predictable at this point
- The show has faked his death too many times
- His "six kids" dream suggests a future worth living for
- Joe Keery is beloved—the backlash would be immense
The Duffer Brothers' Hint: Ross Duffer said: "We've been baiting Steve's death since Season 2. At some point, you have to either do it or admit you're not going to."
That's not reassuring either way.
Fan Reactions to Steve's Survival
When Volume 2 dropped and Steve survived, fans exploded with relief:
- "STEVE LIVES" trended on Twitter/X
- Memes about Steve's "plot armor" flooded social media
- Some fans are convinced it's a setup for a finale death
The Exhaustion Factor: Many fans expressed "death fake-out fatigue"—the show has teased Steve's death so many times that they're emotionally drained. Some have said they'd almost prefer him dying to end the anxiety.
The Hopeful Faction: Others believe the Duffers are deliberately subverting expectations. After years of teasing, they'll let Steve live as the ultimate twist—the character everyone expected to die survives.
The Bottom Line
As of December 25, 2025: Steve Harrington is alive.
As of December 31, 2025: We'll find out his ultimate fate.
The finale is a 2-hour-and-5-minute epic that will resolve every character's story. Steve's fate—along with the rest of the Party—will be answered definitively.
Until then, enjoy the fact that your favorite babysitter made it through Volume 2. Whether he survives the finale is a question only the Duffer Brothers can answer.
Check back after December 31st for the complete update on Steve's fate.
