Episode 2 delivers what fans of George R.R. Martin's novellas have been waiting for: Dunk the Tall at his first real tournament. But Ashford isn't just a chance at glory—it's a collision between the world Dunk knows and the world he's trying to enter.
Arriving at Ashford
The episode opens with Dunk and Egg approaching Ashford Meadow, where the tournament celebrating Lord Ashford's daughter is underway. It's the biggest gathering Dunk has ever seen—and immediately, his status as a hedge knight makes him an outsider.
Peter Claffey plays Dunk's mix of awe and anxiety perfectly. He wants to belong. He knows he doesn't. And every interaction reminds him of the gap between who he is and who he's pretending to be.
Egg, meanwhile, is struggling with his own secret. His brother Daeron is somewhere in this crowd. If they cross paths, Egg's adventure ends.
Registering for the Lists
To compete, a knight must prove his status. Other knights present their sigils, their lineages, their pedigrees. Dunk has none of this.
What he has is a dead master's armor, a horse that's seen better days, and a squire who might be the most important person in the realm. It's almost enough. Almost.
The show builds tension around whether Dunk will be allowed to compete. The answer comes with conditions—and the implicit understanding that hedge knights exist at the pleasure of their betters.
Egg's Close Call
The episode's tensest sequence involves Egg nearly running into his family. When Targaryen banners appear, Egg has to disappear fast. His shaved head helps, but the fear of recognition is constant.
Dexter Sol Ansell sells Egg's panic beautifully. This isn't a game to him. If he's caught, he loses everything he's found with Dunk—freedom, adventure, friendship.
Dunk notices Egg's strange behavior but doesn't push. He has his own problems.
Setting Up Conflict
Episode 2 ends with the pieces in place for the conflict to come. We've met the nobles Dunk will face. We've seen the class dynamics that make his participation controversial. And we've gotten hints that not everyone at Ashford is what they seem.
The tournament promises glory, but it also promises danger. Knights die in tourneys. And some of the men Dunk will face would rather see a hedge knight dead than victorious.
Episode 3 airs next Sunday. Based on the source material, things are about to get very intense.
